Founder’s Journey

Early Research and Education

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in New Delhi, India – where Dr. Javid Wani began his research career. Dr. Javid Wani’s journey in science began at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, where he worked as a Junior Research Fellow studying tumor suppressor gene. During this period (1998–2000), he contributed to cutting-edge cancer research, laying a strong foundation in molecular biology.

In 2000, he joined the Center for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) in Hyderabad as part of India’s first genome project, gaining valuable experience in genomics. This early work in top Indian research institutions honed Dr. Wani’s expertise in genetic engineering and biotechnology.

Global Research Contributions in Germany

Building on his successes in India, Dr. Wani expanded his research globally. He moved to Germany in 2001 as a guest scientist at the Institute for Human Genetics in Neuherberg, where he engaged in groundbreaking studies on gene therapy and stem cell research. This international experience allowed him to explore advanced genetic techniques and regenerative medicine, contributing to innovative therapies. For his doctoral studies, Dr. Wani attended Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), completing a Ph.D. in 2005 with a dissertation on the role of nitric oxide in kidney disease. His Ph.D. research was pioneering – he demonstrated how nitric oxide modulates genes linked to fibrosis in renal cells, an important insight into kidney disease mechanisms. After earning his doctorate, Dr. Wani further broadened his expertise with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, poised to translate his research findings into real-world medical solutions.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and Diagnostics Breakthroughs

In 2008, Dr. Wani channeled his scientific acumen into entrepreneurship by founding BioCentra LLC, a biotech venture aimed at developing novel diagnostics and therapeutics. Through BioCentra, he focused on peptide-based vaccines, cancer biopharmaceuticals, and innovative molecular diagnostic technologies. One of his major achievements was the development of an affordable Hepatitis C viral load test, addressing a critical need in infectious disease diagnostics. Dr. Wani and his team created a rapid and cost-effective platform-independent HCV test (later branded GoldQuant™), which was over 50% cheaper and significantly faster than existing tests. This breakthrough technology promised to make hepatitis C monitoring accessible in low-resource settings. He successfully secured funding to advance this project – notably applying for a $250,000 small business grant to expand R&D for the HCV test’s development. Under Dr. Wani’s leadership, BioCentra even partnered with the U.S. CDC to conduct large-scale clinical trials of the new HCV diagnostic, validating its performance for widespread use.

Dr. Wani’s entrepreneurial drive led BioCentra to spin off multiple successful biotech initiatives. He was instrumental in developing nano-formulations of cannabinoids for therapeutic use, exploring how nanotechnology can improve drug delivery of cannabis-derived compounds. In 2019, he established TopBlood LLC (in Round Rock, Texas) as Austin’s first high-complexity diagnostics laboratory. TopBlood quickly became a community hub for accessible lab testing and was pivotal during the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the region’s first COVID-19 testing centers. Dr. Wani scaled up COVID-19 PCR and rapid testing services to meet public demand, and the lab’s success eventually led to its acquisition in 2022. In 2021, Dr. Wani launched BioCentra Diagnostics – a state-of-the-art CAP and CLIA-accredited laboratory dedicated to infectious disease diagnostics. This modern lab (based in Houston) earned recognition for its contributions during the pandemic and beyond, offering high-throughput, highly sensitive molecular assays. Under his guidance, BioCentra Diagnostics has become synonymous with quality and innovation in diagnostic testing, partnering with national laboratories and public health agencies to improve test accessibility.

Innovating Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosis – TBioScan™

Most recently, in 2024 Dr. Wani introduced TBioScan™, a groundbreaking diagnostic tool for traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBioScan™ is a next-generation blood test that measures a panel of brain injury biomarkers to quickly and accurately detect mild to moderate TBI. This innovation is poised to transform TBI diagnosis worldwide – providing a much-needed point-of-care test that can identify concussions and internal brain trauma from a simple blood sample. By quantifying proteins released after head injury, TBioScan™ helps clinicians assess injury severity and make timely treatment decisions, potentially reducing reliance on expensive imaging for routine concussion evaluation. Dr. Wani’s TBioScan™ has been hailed as a game-changer in sports medicine, emergency care, and military applications, where rapid TBI assessment is critical. Early clinical evaluations indicate that this tool could improve outcomes for countless patients by enabling earlier intervention and monitoring of brain injuries. This achievement underscores Dr. Wani’s unique ability to merge cutting-edge scientific innovation with practical healthcare solutions, filling a crucial gap in diagnostics for neurological trauma.
